大学概况University Profile
Established as one of the top 10 modern universities, Nottingham Trent (NTU) saw one of the biggest increases in enrolments of any UK university in 2013, taking 700 more undergraduates than it did in the previous year in spite of a decline in applications. The influx took the university back to levels of recruitment it enjoyed before £9,000 fees were introduced.
The university has gained a further nine places in our league table this year off the back of a strong showing in the National Student Survey where our analysis shows a gain in student satisfaction from 81.4% to 83.1% in the past 12 months to put the university among the top 40 institutions in this guide.
Students are enrolling at a university that is increasing its international dimension: more than 7,000 students take NTU degrees in partner colleges overseas and the university is aiming to offer all its students an ‘international learning experience’. This may involve a study or work placement abroad, learning a foreign language or studying another culture or country.
The university has spent £350m in 10 years recruiting new staff and upgrading its three campuses, the latest tranche going on a students’ union building which opened on the main City site this year. It features a 2,400-capacity venue and a £1m light and sound system.
The development includes sports facilities and over 500 student bedrooms, as well as bars and other social space. Other projects, which included the regeneration of two Grade II-listed buildings in the city centre, have added new lecture theatres, restaurants, student services areas and laboratories.
The Boots Library and the art and design facilities on the City site have been upgraded, while the Clifton Campus, five miles away, has a new “superlab” for 200 science students. At the same time, £20m has been spent on a new animal unit and veterinary nursing centre at the Brackenhurst campus, 14 miles outside Nottingham, where an eco-friendly library opened in 2013.
A third of the undergraduates come from working-class homes and over 93% attended state schools or colleges. The projected dropout rate has improved and, at less than 10%, is now lower than the national average for the university’s courses and entry grades.
Following the scrapping of the government’s National Scholarship Programme, the university has a new approach to scholarships this year. From offering NTU Scholarships of £1,600 each year to students from homes with less than £25,000 household income, the level of NTU support has been cut 37.5% to £1,000 a year but many more students should qualify with the qualification threshold raised to £30,000 of household income, so more should qualify for assistance.
Best known for fashion and other creative arts, the university also boasts one of the UK’s biggest law schools, offering legal practice courses for both solicitors and barristers, as well as degrees. A three-year LLB (Hons) Law and Legal Practice course integrates an LLB law degree with the solicitors’ Legal Practice Course.
Otherrecent academic developments include a number of sponsored degrees offered by the business school, where the students work full-time for a company whilst studying for their degree. Students have their fees paid by the sponsoring company and also receive a salary.
A new management and finance degree gives students a degree and CIMA qualification in four years instead of the usual seven, also with fees and salary paid by a company.
An extensive research programme attracted an £8m donation – thought to be the largest to a post-1992 university – to advance the university’s work in cancer diagnosis and therapy. Researchers at the purpose-built facility on the Clifton Campus work with leading cancer research institutions in the USA, Europe and Asia.
The university held its own in the last Research Assessment Exercise, although it entered fewer academics than some of the other leading new universities. More than a third of its submission was rated world-leading or internationally excellent.
Art and design, architecture, law, business and the social sciences are taught on the main campus, while science and technology, education, and the humanities are based at Clifton, which has seen the addition of six new blocks of high-quality student accommodation that will form part of a student village.
The Brackenhurst campus is devoted to animal, rural and environmental studies. It includes one of the region’s best-equipped equestrian centres, with a purpose-built indoor riding area. Another 300 residential places were added there in 2006, following a £3m renewal of the teaching facilities. With private providers adding to the university’s residential stock of more than 4,000 beds, all first years and overseas students can be housed.
NTU has a strong sporting reputation and always fares well in the BUCS leagues. The new Lee Westwood Sports Centre is on the Clifton campus and boasts an array of top facilities, including sports halls, studios, fitness suites and a nutrition training centre.
NTU alumni include England rugby player Nick Easter and Great Britain hockey players Crista Cullen, Alistair Wilson and Adam Dixon, who was one of three current or former NTU students who took part in the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, winning a bronze medal.
Social life varies between campuses, but all have access to the city’s lively cultural and clubbing scene. A total student population in Nottingham of 60,000 between the two universities ensures that students are well provided for.
学生观点Student view
Marcus Boswell, students’ union president
First impressions
There have been developments at all three campuses, from a new students’ union building to modern lecture theatres and a library.
Worst feature
Getting outranked by the University of Nottingham, but we still have a great relationship and do lots of charity work together.
Making a difference
We are working to create a student manifesto ahead of the 2015 general elections to raise political awareness.
Deal clincher
Each of the three campuses has its own subculture so there is something for everyone.
