大学概况University Profile
UEA is seldom outside the top 10 in our analysis of the National Student Survey (NSS) – and this year is no exception. The 15,000 students appear to like the scale of this relatively small campus university, as well as the quality of its courses and the accessibility of staff. They can bring any inquiries to four learning and teaching “hubs” – one for nursing, two for undergraduates in the other 25 academic schools and one for postgraduates.
Buoyed by its NSS performance, UEA has been doing well in our league table in recent years, climbing to a new high this year. A programme of campus investment and refurbishment signals the university’s intention of keeping things that way. Recent projects on the 320-acre site on the outskirts of Norwich include the refurbishment of the Law School’s Earlham Hall complex, the addition of more student accommodation and common space facilities, and a Gymnastics Centre in UEA’s community Sportspark.
In recent years, it has also provided a new health centre, and extended and refurbished the central library, catering facilities and students’ union. An Enterprise Centre to develop students’ entrepreneurial skills is due to open in 2015, along with a new Medical Research Building for the Medical School.
The new Centrum buildingon the Norwich Research Park will create and support new companies and graduate jobs. The new developments continue UEA’s longstanding commitment to sustainability, which is reflected in a top-30 position in the People and Planet Green League of environmental performance.
UEA celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2013, still offering some of the highly regarded broad subject combinations that it pioneered in its early days. The university is ranked among the top 200 in the world by Times Higher Education magazine. Environmental sciences is the flagship school, - another international ranking placed UEA in the top 30 in the world for the impact of its research in this field.
The Climatic Research Unit and the Government-funded Tyndall Centre for Climate Change Research, which has a hub in Shanghai, are among the leaders in the investigation of climate change.
History of art and culture and media were the stars in the 2008 Research Assessment Exercise, when half of their research was considered world-leading. Art history has the benefit of the Sainsbury Centre for the Visual Arts, perhaps the greatest resource of its type on any British campus. The refurbished and extended centre houses a priceless collection of modern and tribal art in a building designed by Norman Foster.
Creative writing is another of UEA’s best-known features and the recipient of a Diamond Jubilee Queen’s Anniversary Prize. Health studies have been among UEA’s fastest-developing areas. The university was awarded one of the first new medical schools for 20 years, and has since added pharmacy and speech and language therapy degree courses.
Nearly nine out of ten undergraduates come from state schools or colleges, and a quarter have a working-class background. Most have the opportunity of work experience as part of their course. An academic adviser guides all students on their options under the modular course system and monitors their progress through to graduation.
The university has sharpened its focus on employability with a strategy that promotes the development of the academic and wider skills that employers demand through the curriculum. In addition, a Graduate Intern Programme enables recent graduates to work full- or part-time for between four and twelve weeks at a business in the eastern region.
UEA opened University Campus Suffolk in 2007, in partnership with the University of Essex, with a main site in Ipswich and smaller bases in Bury St Edmunds, Great Yarmouth, Lowestoft and Otley.
Applications fell by 13% for the second year in a row in 2013, and enrolments also declined despite an increase in the number of international students, prompting the university to “streamline” its course offering.
As part of this process, UEA is closing its base in the City of London that it shared with a private company in order to concentrate on its activities in Norwich. The London campus was mainly for overseas students. However, the university is not abandoning its international ambitions – it has opened a new office in Kuala Lumpur.
Dropout rates at UEA have improved enormously in recent years. The latest projected figure of 6% was better than the national average for the university’s subjects and entry standards.
The university is situated in parkland, with easy access to Norwich, voted one of the best small cities in the world and also England’s first UNESCO City of Literature in 2012. The impressive Sportspark boasts an Olympic-sized swimming pool, fitness and aerobics centres, athletics track, gymnastics facilities, climbing wall, courts and pitches. The university was chosen as the base for the English Institute of Sport in the East.

First impressions
A friendly and accepting university bubble close to the city.
Worst feature
Don’t let the 1960s architecture put you off, we’ve got a lake and a forest garden.
Making a difference
UEA takes the lead in IPPC (Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change) reports on climate change.
Deal clincher
Norwich is vibrant and quiet at the same, and has a great music scene.
