大学概况University Profile
The University of West London (UWL) is nearing the end of its £50m Future Campus project, which is bringing major improvements to the university’s main site in Ealing. A refurbished students’ union with a modern bar area, café and gym opened last year, alongside a new performance centre.
During the coming year, the university will open a new library, refectory, bookshop and a social space at the heart of the Ealing campus. Existing teaching and social space will also be upgraded as part of the project.
The campus had already seen significant investment, as the university opted for the narrower geographical focus implied when it dropped the tarnished title of Thames Valley University. The heavy spending on facilities is reflected in UWL’s ranking of 53 for the amount spent per student in the past year.
The Slough campus has closed and most activities were concentrated on the institution’s original base, as UWL set about becoming the country’s leading university for employer engagement, with an accent on the creative industries and entrepreneurship.
Like other universities to have changed their names in recent years, UWL enjoyed immediate growth in applications. By 2013, this had developed into rising enrolments, but then came a Home Office ban in June on recruiting foreign students as the university was accused of failing to carry out adequate checks on English language competence.
With more than one in 10 students enrolled coming from outside the European Union, the two-month ban, which was lifted earlier this month, was a significant issue for UWL.
Professor Peter John, the vice-chancellor, had spoken of a “new dawn” with students attracted by a guaranteed work placement, in-study financial support and good employment prospects. Those employment prospects are improving with the university securing one of its highest performance ratings (55=) on this measure in our league table
Although degrees will cost £9,000 a year from next year, the average allowing for all forms of student support will still be among the lowest in England, at £7,832.
The pre-registration nursing courses that dominated the Slough campus have moved to Reading, leaving just part-time business courses and some post-registration nursing at a different site in Slough.
The Reading campus, known as the Berkshire hub, is within walking distance of the mainline station and focuses entirely on nursing and midwifery.
The landmark Paragon Building in Brentford, not far from the Ealing campus, will remain the headquarters of one of the largest healthcare faculties in Britain with top quality ratings for nursing and midwifery. The site contains residential places, as well as teaching facilities.
Amid the reconstruction, new honours degrees have been launched in areas such as video production, 3D design, entrepreneurship, computing and information systems. The portfolio of two-year foundation degrees is growing, with employers such as Compaq, Ealing Studios and the Savoy Hotel Group helping to provide courses. Some are run in conjunction with Stratford-upon-Avon College – one of several partner institutions.
New degrees to be launched in 2015 will include policing, building surveying, psychology with substance use and misuse studies, film music composition and operating department practice. Undergraduates have access to an award-winning Student Portal, which combines academic study with social networking.
Including part-timers, who account for nearly a third of the places, three-quarters of the students are over 21, and about 60% are female. More than 40% of the undergraduates come from working-class homes. The university is also very ethnically diverse with only 45% of the undergraduates of white, UK origin.
Although student satisfaction ratings have been improving, UWL still finds itself in the bottom 20 under our analysis of the National Student Survey.
However, the School of Hospitality and Tourism is recognised by the Académie Culinaire de France for its culinary arts programmes, while the London College of Music, which is part of the university, has some of the longest-established music technology courses in the country.
The university improved its ratings considerably in the 2008 Research Assessment Exercise, but entered only a small proportion of its academics. Only nursing and midwifery was judged to have world-leading research.
The town-centre sites in Ealing and Brentford are linked by a free bus service. The busy Ealing base is within easy reach of central London without the metropolitan hassle that students encounter at some institutions in the capital.
Almost half of UWL’s students are from London or Berkshire. Residential accommodation is growing and the Paragon building, in Brentford, won Building magazine’s Major Housing Project of the Year award.
The student village in Ealing can accommodate up to 440 students and the Paragon up to 839. However, students who rely on private housing find the cost of living high. The new gym is reserved for student use, and the students’ union has also established links with local sports teams, ensuring that all the university’s sports clubs have access to good facilities in the vicinity.
学生观点Student view
Josh Goddard, students’ union president
First impressions
I first met a member of the union who introduced me to the university and gave me the passion for it that I have today.
Worst feature
Leaving is the worst bit, you’re no longer in a learning environment and living with all your friends.
Making a difference
In May, we have award ceremonies for student volunteers to celebrate all the great charity work we do.
Deal clincher
It’s a life-changing experience; you make great friends and come out with a fantastic degree.
