Time is running out for City University London to meet its 2016 targets of reaching the top 200 in the institutional world rankings and the top 35 in The Times and The Sunday Timesuniversity league table. But other parts of the university’s strategy are certainly bearing fruit: it saw the biggest percentage rise in satisfaction scores in the 2013 National Student Survey – although scores have slipped again in 2014 – and is in the midst of an extensive programme of campus improvements.

The Northampton Square campus has been rejuvenated and another £130m of refurbishment and new developments are planned over the next five years. Both applications and enrolments grew in 2013, following falls the previous year, and City is in the top ten universities for the number of international students it recruits. Students come from more than 160 countries to study on the borders of the financial district and a quarter of the academics are also from overseas.

Marketing itself as the “international university in the heart of London”, City added the name of the capital to its title to make the most of its greatest asset. Once a college of advanced technology, the university now has roughly a quarter of its students taking business courses, another quarter health and community subjects, and the remaining half law, computing, mathematics, engineering, journalism and the arts. It is very much the university of/for the professions.

Another part of its strategy is to ‘rebalance’ its undergraduate intake, focusing on the university’s strengths in business and law at the expense of health subjects, and increasing its average entry qualifications at the same time.

There is a range of scholarships worth up to £3,000 per year for UK and EUstudents who achieve exceptional grades at 'A' level, International Baccalaureate or other qualifications.

City has also been investing heavily in the recruitment of research-oriented academics.

There are about 19,000 students, more than a third of them postgraduates. City also remains among the most popular universities, with more than seven applications for each undergraduate place. The university has also increased its part-time numbers, against the national trend, with many students taking short courses that do not lead to a formal qualification.

City has a better record than most of its peer group for widening participation in higher education, with over 41% of its undergraduates coming from working-class homes, well above the expected level.

The university has strong links with business and the professions, and reaps the benefits with consistently good graduate employment figures. Courses have a practical edge, and many of the staff hold professional, as well as academic, qualifications.

Six interdisciplinary centres have been launched to increase collaborative teaching and research, as well as to build stronger links between industry and academia.

The Cass Business School is one of City’s great strengths, ranking among the top 50 business schools in the world. Based in the heart of the financial district, it has built up an impressive cadre of visiting practitioner lecturers who find it easy and convenient to visit. City has links with 50 European universities and many more further afield, and many students spend a year of their course abroad.

The City Law School, which incorporated the Inns of Court School of Law in 2001, was the first in London to offer a “one-stop shop” for legal training, from undergraduate to professional courses.

The School of Journalism, within the School of Arts, is highly regarded and the university has launched the UK’s first graduate school of journalism in £12m premises.

There is a flourishing short course programme which ranges from sitcom writing to e-business. Communications and media, ranking 23, is City’s highest placed subject in the QS World University subject rankings published last February. City also has a very high reputation in music, where it is associated with the Guildhall School of Music and Drama.

Together with nursing and midwifery, music achieved the university’s best results in the 2008 Research Assessment Exercise. Social work and social policy also produced good results.

Development is continuing at the university’s Islington campus. The library has been renovated at a cost of £2.3m, giving students more space, upgraded technology and better support. The Student Centre and Careers Centre have been refurbished and a new common room for students added. The School of Law has been upgraded and the School of Health Sciences has moved to the main campus with new facilities including a new biomedical and clinical skills centre.

The Students’ Union is popular and the Student Centre, which provides advice on a range of topics, is the only one in the UK to be recognised by The Institute of Customer Service. The Sports Centre’s redevelopment will be complete by the end of 2014. Much-needed improvements will include a six-court sports hall, a 100-station fitness area, improved and expanded changing facilities and four multipurpose studios. The new CitySport facility will be open to local residents as well as students and staff.
