大学概况University Profile
Shortlisted for our University of the Year award twice in the past four years, Surrey is a university on the up. From a starting point of 37= in our league table as recently as 2009, Surrey now finds itself on the threshold of our elite top 10 after another nudge upwards in our rankings.
No other university has achieved such a dramatic transformation in fortunes in the past five years, the achievement underpinned by some of the highest levels of student satisfaction and outstanding graduate employment prospects in the country.
A new £40m veterinary school – only the second to be established in half a century - will be fully open for the start of the academic year in 2015, with world-class clinical skills centres, a pathology facility and teaching, research and diagnostic laboratories.
It can only add to the attractions of a university which saw applications rise by an extraordinary 42% in 2013, demand for places doubling over just six years. New undergraduate enrolments grew by a third last year as a result of the surge in applicants.
The university has been among the most innovative in the UK in recent years, reducing its dependence on state funding even before the introduction of £9,000 fees, developing and extending the campus in Guildford, and launching a joint venture in China.
Student satisfaction rates have improved by leaps and bounds, with the university ranking fourth in our analysis of this year’s National Student Survey.
The university has remained true to its technological history with large numbers taking engineering and science subjects, but it has other strengths in business and the sector-leading School of Hospitality and Tourism Management.
Surrey has also incorporated the Guildford School of Acting and opened the £4.5m Ivy Arts Centre in 2011, with a 200-seat theatre and workshops.
Undergraduates in most subjects undertake work placements of one year, or several shorter periods, often abroad. As a result, most degrees last four years. The format and the subject balance combine to keep Surrey at or near the top of the graduate employment league, and the dropout rate of 5.5% is well below the level expected for a university with Surrey’s subject and student mix.
All students are encouraged to take a free course in a European language alongside their degree, in a programme known as the Global Graduate Award. Over 91% of Surrey undergraduates are state educated and 28% are from working class backgrounds.
International activities have been increasing. Surrey has one of the largest proportions of overseas students at any university – more than a fifth – and is a member of the University Global Partnership Network (UGPN) involving North Carolina State University and the Universidad de Sao Paulo in Brazil. The biggest development has seen the opening of a campus in Dalian, China with the Dongbei University of Finance and Economics.
More than half of the work submitted for the last Research Assessment Exercise was considered world-leading or internationally excellent. More recently, Surrey’s chemical engineering received two awards for innovation and excellence from the Institution of Chemical Engineers and the university has secured £35m funding from business and government for a 5G communication research centre, which will be the first in the world dedicated to mobile technologies.
Electronic engineering was one of 12 university departments in any subject to be awarded a Regius Professorship as part of the Queen’s Jubilee. The proportion of its research income coming from private business and industry has grown to about 70% in little over a decade. BP sponsored the new Centre for Petroleum and Surface Chemistry, for example. The Surrey Research Park is one of the largest in the UK still to be owned, funded and managed by its host university.
The compact campus is a 10-minute walk from the centre of Guildford. Many of the buildings date from the late 1960s, but the refurbished and extended library and learning centre, and the gleaming Duke of Kent Building, which houses the growing health and medical provision, offer a striking contrast.
The campus includes two lakes, playing fields and enough residential accommodation to enable all first years to live in. The virtual learning environment, SurreyLearn allows students to work with others on their courses online and to take part in discussions and blogs, as well as allowing lecturers to set coursework and interact with students.
The Manor Park campus, which is effectively an extension of the university’s Stag Hill headquarters, provides over 1,500 residential places for students and staff, as well as a reception building with café, bar and lounge areas.
The impressive Surrey Sports Park, with extensive indoor and outdoor facilities, opened in 2010.
The main campus is the centre of social life, and has seen recent improvements to leisure facilities including new dining and social areas. Guildford has plenty of retail, cultural and recreational facilities and the proximity of London (35 minutes by train) is an attraction to many students, although it also helps account for the high cost of living.
