大学概况University Profile
Queen Margaret (QMU) moved into an impressive, modern campus designed in consultation with the students in the seaside town of Musselburgh, to the southeast of Edinburgh, when it was awarded university status in 2007.
Still one of our smallest universities, it has proved a big attraction for applicants and is extending its reach further by making its facilities available to college students who may be unsure whether to commit to a degree.
The innovative Associate Student Scheme was launched with Edinburgh College, where students have signed up for an Associate BA in events management or international tourism and hospitality management. It has now been extended to Newbattle Abbey College, in Dalkeith, for degrees in psychology and sociology.
Students are taught in college for the first two years of their course, making regular visits to the campus, where some even choose to live, before transferring to QMU.
Other institutional partnerships have seen the university open the first UK branch campus in Singapore, a joint venture with the East Asia Institute of Management, which already taught Queen Margaret degree courses. The university also has international programmes in Nepal, Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Greece and Switzerland.
Named after Saint Margaret, the 11th-century Queen of Scotland, the institution dates back to 1875 and was originally a school of cookery for women.
True to its roots, the university is investing heavily in research and knowledge exchange facilities in the area of food, launching the Scottish Centre for Food Development and Innovation this year. Italso has a partnership with the Edinburgh New Town Cookery School, run by a former graduate of QMU, to hone the practical skills of students on the international hospitality management degree.
There are now more than 6,000 students, three-quarters of them female, divided between two schools: Arts, Social Sciences and Management, and Health Sciences.
The university has established three flagship areas as a focus for future investment and development: health and rehabilitation, sustainable business, and culture and creativity. It promises “inter-professional” teaching and research to encourage the professions to work better together.
Health is an area of particular strength: QMU has the broadest range of allied health courses in Scotland, from dietetics, podiatry and audiology, to art therapy, music therapy and health psychology. The university has an international reputation for its work in speech sciences, and launched a Clinical Audiology, Speech and Language Research Centre in 2011.
Courses in international health attract students from all over the world. The interdisciplinary drama and performance degree draws together the university’s recognised strengths in acting, screen work, community theatre, contemporary performance and playwriting to reflect the current needs of a changing profession. QMU also offers a degree in costume design and construction.
It slips significantly in our league table this year. While student satisfaction scores have improved, other performance indicators have remained static or, in the case of graduate prospects, seen a decline. With the competition from other institutions and the average level of performance increasing all the time, many have overtaken QMU this year.
The university has a good record for graduate employment, which it attributes to a strong relationship between teaching and research, and up-to-date course design that is relevant to the world of work.
Specialist laboratories and clinics are well equipped and should prepare students for work after graduation. The nursing simulation lab, for example, is set out exactly like a hospital ward, helping to instil students with the confidence to move on easily to a work placement or career in the NHS or private practice. There are also well-equipped rooms for podiatry, radiography, occupational therapy, physiotherapy and art therapy.
An impressive learning resource centre, parts of which are open 24 hours a day, offers a variety of study spaces. There are a number of sponsored awards, including five worth £1,000 each from Ryder Cup Europe to fund tourism, hospitality and event students.
The campus, which has won a string of awards, is one of the most environmentally sustainable in the UK, exceeding current standards. The university has made sustainability a top priority, in the curriculum as well as in the way it operates, and ties with Edinburgh Napier for top place in Scotland in the People and Planet league of environmental performance.
The campus is located next to Musselburgh train station, from where Edinburgh city centre is only a six-minute journey. There is also a frequent bus service from the campus to the city centre. There are 800 residential places on the campus, about 300 of them larger, premier rooms with double beds and more space.
Other features include a students’ union building, indoor and outdoor sports facilities, a variety of catering outlets and landscaped gardens with a range of environmental features.

First impressions
Class sizes are smaller than other universities so you get to know people really quickly.
Worst feature
Wifi can be temperamental, which is annoying for the 21st Century student bur we’re getting it sorted.
Making a difference
There is a new scheme called Children’s University involving activities that break down the barriers between schools and higher education.
Deal clincher
Staff are very approachable and take time to get to know their students.
