大学概况University Profile
Edge Hill opened its £17m flagship building, Creative Edge, in 2014 – which delivers to students just what it promises on the name plaque. It houses industry-standard equipment and resources for students on media, film, animation, advertising and computing degrees. The complex is also home to the newly established Institute for Creative Enterprise, which acts as an interface between academic research and the creative industries.
A partnership with the Liverpool-based internet broadcaster Bay TV, which now broadcasts regularly from Creative Edge, gives students the opportunity to work on live TV and secure work placements without leaving campus. The Label Recordings, Edge Hill’s own record label, also gives students the chance to work in an industry setting on everything from talent spotting and recording, to creating music videos, to PR and marketing campaigns.
More than £180m has been spent on the 160-acre campus over the past decade, and there are plans for significant further expansion following the purchase of land adjoining the existing site.
The spacious £13.5m Student Hub building houses the students’ union and also contains open access computers, dining and shopping facilities, and social space. The university has invested £41m in facilities in the last year alone. They include a new Biosciences building, upgraded accommodation for Geosciences, plus a further 273 student bed spaces. There are now some 1,750 residential places on campus.
Work also began on a £25m sports complex for students and the local community. New 3G pitches and a competition standard athletics track are already in use, with a new sports centre, including 25m swimming pool, 100-station fitness centre and eight-court sports hall, scheduled for completion later in the year.
The new facilities have enabled Edge Hill to introduce a range of new undergraduate degree programmes including human biology, ecology, motion graphics, games programming, and networking, security and forensics. Other new degrees include counselling and psychotherapy and psychosocial analysis of offending behaviour.
Edge Hill has moved up nearly 30 places in five years in our league table and applications continued to rise in 2013. The university had promised to use most of the income from £9,000 undergraduate fees to continue enhancing its students’ learning experience.
Based at Ormskirk, Edge Hill had been one of the fastest growing universities in the UK before the fees went up, as well as one of the newest. It has more than doubled its complement of students since the millennium to reach over 22,000, although little more than 9,000 of them are on full-time undergraduate courses. The largest numbers are on part-time postgraduate courses for the professions.
From 2014, all undergraduates on arts and science programmes have the opportunity to undertake a sandwich year in industry or a year studying abroad to enhance their learning and boost their employability.
Although university status arrived only in 2005, Edge Hill moved to its landscaped campus in the 1930s and has been training teachers since the 19th century. It has long since expanded into other subjects, but remains the largest provider of secondary teacher training and courses for classroom assistants.
It also won the lion’s share of funding to deliver further training for qualified secondary school teachers. In 2011, the Faculty of Education achieved an unprecedented “outstanding” grade in all 33 possible graded areas of its Ofsted inspection across all three phases of its teacher-training provision.
The Solstice (Supported Online Learning for Students using Technology for Information and Communication in their Education) e-learning centre is recognised officially as a national centre of excellence in teaching and learning. It has a particular focus on learning in the workplace, but is involved with curriculum development and delivery in all three of the university’s faculties. Three-quarters of all graduates leave with professional accreditation.
All students have a personal tutor, as well as access to counsellors and financial advice, which helps explain the high scores in the annual National Student Survey, where Edge Hill consistently outperforms many of its more illustrious rivals in the Northwest.
Beyond Ormskirk, there are seven satellite campuses in Liverpool, Manchester and other parts of the North West to facilitate local learning. In addition, a range of further education colleges in the region teach the university’s Foundation degrees.
Edge Hill has one of the highest proportions of state-educated students in England (98%) and 42% of undergraduates have a working-class background. The projected dropout rate of 10.3% is also considerably better than the university’s benchmark.
An award-winning student finance support package rewards achievement, as well as encouraging students to complete their studies, rather than simply offering incentives for enrolling. Bursaries and scholarships have been extended, and there are separate awards in sport, the performing arts, volunteering and the creative arts. In 2014, introduced three new scholarships worth up to £1,000 per year, were introduced to recognise sporting talent and ambition in prospective students.
学生观点Student view
Kayley Wilson, students’ union president
First impressions
Campus is covered in flowers, has a lovely pond and you are always bumping into friends.
Worst feature
We don’t have a 24-hour library yet but plans are in place to rectify this.
Making a difference
This year we signed the Time to Change pledge and the union now works with the university to stamp out mental health discrimination.
Deal clincher
Everyone knows each other on campus, from lecturers to other staff members to students, and the students’ union bar is great.
