概述
埃塞克斯大学是英国的一流院校之一，主要以的研究和探索为学术的重点并因此而闻名全国，在1965年获颁英国皇家勋章。学校下设4个学院，共16个学系。埃塞克斯大学在2008年英国官方科研水平评估RAE（Research Assessment Exercise）排名中名列第9。
学校有专门为学生提供的现代化的住宿，其中百分之八十八的住宿在校园里。国际学生只要在截止日之前申请，都会在他们的学习过程中保证有学校的宿舍提供。学生来自世界120多个国家。学校的主校园实际上是一座大学城，所以这里既有教学楼、学生宿舍，也有商店、银行、一座美术馆、湖滨剧院、酒吧、咖啡馆与体育设施。
校园在200多英亩的绿地之上，大部分始建于18世纪，环境安全而优美。主校园距英国有记载的最古老的镇科尔切斯特仅两英里，该镇也是英国的第一个首都。从科尔切斯特乘火车到伦敦50分钟。从这里到伦敦斯坦斯特德机场与轮渡港口哈里奇（Harwich）的交通异常便利，位于拉夫顿的“东15（East 15）”表演学院不在主校园内，距离伦敦更近。学院已经在Southend修建一个新的市区校园。

设施服务
实验室
校园里的开放实验室里有400多台电脑，每周开放7天，其中100多台24小时开放。这些电脑上安装了50种应用软件。如果有特殊需要和大量计算，学生还可以使用中央Unix多用户系统。图书馆开放的时间很长（学期间每周84小时），馆藏多达91万册，包括3800份刊物。
学生宿舍
埃塞克斯大学学生宿舍为膳食自理型单人间，有的带私人浴室，位于科尔切斯特校园里及其附近。在海外本科生与一年制研究生在校期间，学校保证以合理的价格为他们提供宿舍。所有房间均安装了互联网和电话。
埃塞克斯大学的宿舍有几处，分别是the Towers (4 处在北部，2处在南部)、the South Courts、the Houses 和Wolfson Court。其中，the Towers的住宿费最低， the South Courts是豪华套间而住宿费最高。

奖学金
埃塞克斯大学的奖学金用以支持有才华的研究生，尤其是打算在大学继续深造的博士生。所有的奖学金都以减免学费的方式发放，很多还有部分助学金，优先考虑研究式学生。如果课程于10月开学，那么该奖学金的申请应该在同年4月底之前提交给该开设研究生课程的学科系。
ORS奖学金为成绩突出的海外研究式学生支付海外学费和本国学费之间的差额，可以和大学的其他奖学金一起申请，但是该奖学金不包括旅行交通费和其他费用。大学在学科系推荐的基础上提名候选人。该候选人应该有进行研究的意向，并且在一月中旬前提交申请。

大学概况University Profile
Essex has set itself ambitious targets to be “firmly established” in the top 25 UK universities in five years’ time, while also increasing its student numbers by 50%. By 2019, too, every subject should be among the top 20% of institutions in its discipline.
The university sees these ambitions as chiming with those of its founders, who wanted Essex to be “freer, more daring, more experimental”. The social sciences already meet those standards comfortably and the university achieves excellent student satisfaction scores across the board. This year’s seven place rise in our league table to 32 puts the university within touching distance of its overall ranking target.
Essex, which is celebrating its 50th anniversary, is ranked by Times Higher Education magazine in the top 100 in the world for social sciences and in the top 200 overall.
The university received the only Regius Professorship in Political Science in the awards to mark the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee and achieved the best results in the last Research Assessment Exercise for both politics and sociology. It was also in the top three for accounting and finance, history and economics. Essex featured in the top ten in more than half of the 14 areas in which it was assessed, demonstrating quality well beyond its traditional strengths in the social sciences. It has been building up its science departments, and is strong in biological sciences and computing.
The main campus, two miles from Colchester, is set in 200 acres of parkland. The university has been carrying out major refurbishments to its 1960s buildings, at the same time as expanding student facilities. The Albert Sloman Library is being expanded by 30% and a new Student Centre will open in 2015, providing a one-stop hub for student services.
The new developments are costing more than £200m and include a £1.4m gym, renovation of the students’ union bar, a café with adjoining learning space and an innovative shared IT workspace.Wivenhoe House, the original centrepiece of the campus, has been converted into a thriving four-star hotel run by and home to the Edge Hotel School.
Essex Business School will open a new £21m building during 2014 with the same low-carbon features that have taken the university to the top three in the national Carbon Reduction Commitment rankings. The next change will be the completion of the Knowledge Gateway development, which will provide space for research and business, as well as residential accommodation for 1,300 students.
The incorporation of the East 15 Acting School, in Loughton, as a department of the university was the university’s first venture beyond Colchester. There has since been heavy investment in a third site in Southend-on-Sea – a modern multi-faculty campus offering courses in business, health and the arts.
Situated in the town centre, the Southend Campus has been based around the Gateway Building and Clifftown Studios, a former church that is now the university’s theatre. There is an accommodation complex which also houses a gym and fitness studio. The Forum was added in 2013, a £27m project comprising a public and academic library, learning facilities, café and gallery.
Another regional project has seen Essex collaborate with the University of East Anglia on University Campus Suffolk, which offers courses in Ipswich and at smaller centres across the county. Essex degrees are also taught at Writtle College, near Chelmsford, the Colchester Institute and South East Essex College, in Southend.
The university now has almost 12,000 undergraduates. The student population is unusually diverse for a pre-1992 university, with high proportions of mature and overseas students. A third of undergraduates are from working-class homes and 96 per cent went to state schools or colleges.
The students may have lost the radical edge that brought the university national attention in the late 1960s and 1970s, but they still like to get involved. More than 3,000 registered with a club or society last year, 1,000 undertook voluntary work and 500 completed the Big Essex award, which records their extracurricular activities in their degree transcript.
The Employability and Careers Centre has seen major investment over recent years. The award-winning Frontrunners scheme, established by the university and students’ union, arranges on-campus, paid work experience for students.Many courses offer work placement opportunities. Essex Abroad supports students studying, working or volunteering abroad, while the new Languages for All scheme offers all students language tuition at no extra cost. The university does not charge a fee for a full year abroad, and many courses also include work placement opportunities where students are based.
Social and sporting facilities are good, with an active students’ union and some 40 acres of land on the Colchester campus devoted to sports facilities. All new first years are guaranteed a residential place in university accommodation, which has been voted some of the best in the UK. Some ground-floor flats have been adapted for disabled students.
A £23m new development opened on the main campus in 2013 with 648 student bedrooms in flats and town houses. All the campuses are within easy access of the bright lights of London and, closer still in Colchester and Southend, the tranquil beauty of the Essex coastline.
